On August 20, 2024, Catherine Wolfkamp of St. Marys received the news no one wanted to hear— she had been diagnosed with breast cancer. 

Throughout her courageous journey, Catherine faced each challenge with strength and determination. After completing treatment, a full-body scan in January 2026 brought hopeful news— everything looked clear.

But, just one month later, Catherine began experiencing persistent back pain. After visiting a chiropractor/physiotherapy and massage with no improvement, she knew something wasn’t right. While spending time at the family cottage, Catherine reached a point where she could no longer move her body. She went to a nearby hospital where tests were completed, but she was discharged.

After returning home, Catherine followed up with her family doctor and connected with her oncologist. Shortly after, she received the news that her cancer had returned and spread. While her cancer is not curable, it is treatable— and Catherine remains focused on moving forward. 

“I truly believe I have been able to heal and recover as quickly as I have because of the care I received at SMMH,” Catherine shared. 

From nurses, to physicians to dietitians to every member of the care team, Catherine felt surrounded by compassion. She especially wanted to recognize Avery, an extern who helped make a difficult time feel a little brighter.

For Catherine, the care she experienced at SMMH went beyond medical treatment — it was about feeling supported by her community when she needed it most. Being cared for close to home meant her village of family and friends could stop in, cheer her on, and be part of her recovery journey — whether it was learning to climb the stairs or taking her first walks down the hallway. Having that support system nearby made such a meaningful difference in her healing. 

“If I could sum up my experience at SMMH in one word, it would be community,” Catherine shared. “I felt the community’s love and support.”
